years and to impart proper nutrition and health education to the mothers belonging to the weaker section of our society so that psychological, physical and social development of the child is achieved, the
Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS)
programme (sponsored by Govt.of India) was launched in this district in Krishnagar-II block in the year 1980-81 by the Relief & Social Welfare Deptt. (welfare branch), W.B. through Social Welfare Directorate. Since then concerted efforts in co-ordination with other departments have been on to render package of six basic services to the beneficiaries through A.W. Centres at the village level. During 8
plan period (including annual plan periods for the year 1990-91 & 1991-92) nine projects in Krishnagar-I, Haringhata, Santipur, Ranaghat-I, Chakdah, Nakashipara, Karimpur-II, Karimpur-I and Nabadwip blocks had been sanctioned. With this nine projects all the 17 blocks of this district had been covered by ICDS programme.
